A Rogue Chinese Elm Found

By Artur Ciesielski | Essay

While doing some landscaping, trimming back the deluge of flora and flowers this season I came upon an 18″ tall Chinese Elm that came up from a seed, a seed that, probably, came from this tree.

I planted this tree about 3 years ago. It has come to grow into a beautiful lush tree. It’s in the front of your house, a bit on the North side where it gets lots of sun and a good dousing of water from the irrigation.

I recently found out there are two types of Chinese Elm, I forgot the names of the two, but one is weeping and the other not. Luckily and certainly not by choice, only but a stroke of randomness the one we have is weeping. I have a thing for weeping trees.

Maybe because they remind me of the magnificent and magical Lazienki park in Warsaw, Poland.

This tree sent a seek all the way across the entire building to sit in the most favourable to growth spot. Actually it probably sent lots of seeds, but this one survived because of the conditions and lack of the bi-monthly mowing. It’s not special, but it is: it’s not a stroke of god, but natures desire to have its life propagate and it did.

I’m going to transplant this young tree. The photo above is where I found it and my sole reason for sharing this here, is that I want to share my joy in finding this gem and as a starting point in documenting how this little one grows.

Attention Arthur-
Thank-you for sharing this “Rogue Chinese Elm!” That is a beautiful gem in the desert! Gorgeous plant there, sir! Where did you say you got the seed or found it? YOU are blessed. Thank God for little things in life, “perks” God gives us!

The seed planted itself and it must have come from the larger tree.
